They could wander around in their social groups, had shady areas, walk down to the river and all groups had their own mahouts to look after them. It was truly heartbreaking to see what people had done to them.īut it was also lovely to see how happy and free they were now. Some had been blinded, some had damaged feet and other ailments. The elephant rehabilitation center cared for them now. The elephants at the sanctuary with lots of natural space We, however, visited about a month before this rule change so I’m still going to talk about what we did. Yet another reason why they are high on the list of any ethical elephant sanctuary locations. It is better for the elephants and more natural for them. They have decided to cut out interaction with the elephants bathing to allow the animals the freedom to enjoy themselves. I will start by saying that this is not something Elephant Nature Park offers anymore. Over the other side of the river were more elephants in the main sanctuary. I sat down with my food and a cold drink of water, staring out into the trees and the beautiful views below. There were cold drinks, water, soda and even beer if you wanted to pay a few Baht more. Noodle dishes, rice dishes, stir fried veggies, spring rolls, and even dessert (the best dessert on the planet: mango sticky rice). There was so much good food that I piled my plate high. We were told to bring sunblock, a hat, bug spray, a towel and good shoes. When we booked our day with the elephants we weren’t really sure what to expect. You can do volunteer work with elephants at Elephant Nature Park but with limited time we opted for the day visit. A lot of the elephants at ENP were rescued from riding camps where they were beaten and taught to fear the bull hook to comply with giving rides. Think of how many rides an elephant would give in a place that allows it. But the spine of an elephant was not built for supporting that kind of weight so often. I, like many, thought that elephants are pretty big, surely they can support a tiny human. More people are becoming aware of this which is so good. Why is riding elephants bad? Before we arrived in Thailand we had already agreed that we wanted to do a Thai Cooking class. But as relaxing as our hotel was, we wanted to find some fun things to do in Chiang Mai. We stayed at a wonderful hotel, De Lanna hotel. If I’d know how much I would love Chiang Mai, I would have cut at least one day off Bangkok and added it onto our 4 night stay here. As did visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary It had to be in our itinerary somehow, that’s for sure. But then we’d heard great things about Chiang Mai. We knew we wanted an island getaway for a few days. I had been there before so didn’t want to spend more than a couple days either end of our two week vacation. What is there to do in Thailand?
